금의 순도를 나타내는 단위는 우리에게 익숙한 퍼센트(%)가 아니라 캐럿(carat)입니다. 그래서 순금을 표시할 때는 24K로 나타내고, 불순물이 섞인 금은 18K와 14K로 표시합니다. 금의 단위로 익숙하기 때문에 큰 문제는 없지만 왜 숫자 24를 사용했는지는 궁금하시죠? 숫자 100으로 표시하면 계산하기 좋을 텐데, 왜 24를 사용했던 것일까요?
캐럿은 중동지역에서 나는 식물의 한 종류인 ‘캐럽’에서 유래했다고 합니다. 캐럽은 콩과 식물인 세로토니아속에 속하는 나무열매인데, 그 꼬투리 하나의 무게가 1.25g이고 이 지역 사람들은 말린 캐럽을 한 손에 쥔 정도를 기준으로 금이나 소금 등의 물건을 교환했다고 합니다. 그래서 캐럽이 무게를 재는 기준이 됐던 것이고 캐럽은 보통 어른의 손으로 쥐면 24개가 잡히는데, 순도가 가장 높은 99.99%의 순금을 24K라고 표시하는 것이 바로 여기에서 유래 했다고 합니다.
18K는 18/24의 순도이므로 75%가 금이고, 나머지 25%는 은이나 구리 등 다른 금속이 들어 있다는 의미가 됩니다.
14K는 58.5%의 금이 들어있다는 것으로 생각하시면 됩니다.
